What are we focusing on this upcoming week?
Writing: This week we continued to draft our fictional narratives! Students are working hard on adding in vivid details. Next week, we will finish publishing these stories and start writing poetry!
Reading: This week we continued to read historical fiction and focused on how theme is revealed throughout the story through details and then the theme is what the reader learns about life from the story. We finished the week reading an expository text that connected to what we had been reading in our historical fiction texts and social studies! We made a lot of great connections! Next week, we will start reading poetry! We will continue to talk about theme and learn some poetry terms.
Math: This week we continued to work with decimal notation and began to compare and order decimals following the standard: MGSE4.NF.7 Compare two decimals to hundredths by reasoning about their size. Recognize that comparisons are valid only when the two decimals refer to the same whole. Record the results of comparisons with the symbols >, =, or <. Next week, we will continue to practice with this and start to apply our knowledge to real world problems through this standard: MGSE4.MD.2 Use the four operations to solve word problems involving distances, intervals of time, liquid volumes, masses of objects, and money, including problems involving simple fractions or decimals, and problems that require expressing measurements given in a larger unit in terms of a smaller unit. Represent measurement quantities using diagrams such as number line diagrams that feature a measurement scale.

4.2 (Ms. Smith): Next week in advanced math...
We will start our work with multiplying and dividing.
We will start the week with multiplying (NBT.5). This year, students need to know how to multiply 3-digit numbers by 2-digit numbers. Different strategies for solving such as area models are allowed, but the standard algorithm will be highly encouraged.
Toward the end of the week, we will start our work with division (NBT.6). This year, students need to be able to divide 4-digit numbers by 2-digit numbers. Again, different strategies for solving such as rectangular models and partial quotients are allowed, but standard algorithm will be encouraged.
Our test is coming up on 2/9, so study guides will go home on Thursday. I will also be assigning iReady lessons to help students prepare for the test:)
STEM Supplies Needed:
Mrs. Davis is in need of 16oz water bottles for a STEM Project. She also needs empty 2 Liter bottles for a STEAM day project. Thanks for your help!
