What are we focusing on this week?
- Writing: Students will continue their literary essays. By this time, students have read all 3 stories for the unit (Fox, "Marble Champ", and "Eleven") and will be narrowing down what story they want to use in their essay and what their thesis is going to be.
- Reading: This week, we will be focusing on the following reading standards:
- RL4: Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including those that allude to significant characters found in mythology (e.g., Herculean).
- RL3 [3.0_1] Describe in depth a character in a story or drama, drawing on specific details in the text (e.g. a character’s thoughts, words, or actions)
- RL3 [3.0_2] Describe in depth an event in a story, drawing on specific details in the text
- RL3 [3.0_2] Describe in depth a setting in a story, drawing on specific details in the text

- **Classroom Spelling Bee: Monday, November 29th**
- The New Prospect Spelling Bee will be held on Monday, December 13th at 8:00 AM. Each 4th and 5th grade class will conduct a classroom spelling bee by Wednesday, December 1st to determine a winner and runner-up to represent each class. The winners of the class bees will advance and have the opportunity to compete in the New Prospect Spelling Bee. The winner of the school bee will go on to represent New Prospect at the Fulton County Spelling Bee on Saturday, January 22, 2022 at 8:30 AM. Your child’s teacher has explained this to the class and offered spelling study lists to the students if they are interested in studying for the classroom and school bees. Participation is not required. If you would like a copy of the School Spelling Bee Study List and grade level study words, please reach out to your child’s teacher to send home a copy. If you have any further questions regarding the New Prospect Spelling Bee, please contact our Assistant Principal, Margaret Mathas, at [email protected].
- Math:
- 4.1: Comparing Fractions:
- Students will continue to review the following standards in preparation for the upcoming test:
- MGSE4.NF.1 Explain why two or more fractions are equivalent 𝑎 𝑏 = 𝑛 × 𝑎 𝑛 × 𝑏 ex: 1 4 = 3 × 1 3 × 4 by using visual fraction models. Focus attention on how the number and size of the parts differ even though the fractions themselves are the same size. Use this principle to recognize and generate equivalent fractions.
- MGSE4.NF.2 Compare two fractions with different numerators and different denominators, e.g., by using visual fraction models, by creating common denominators or numerators, or by comparing to a benchmark fraction such as 1/2 . Recognize that comparisons are valid only when the two fractions refer to the same whole. Record the results of comparisons with symbols >, =, or <, and justify the conclusions.
- **UNIT 3 TEST: THURSDAY, DECEMBER 2**
- Students will continue to review the following standards in preparation for the upcoming test:
- 4.2: Multi-digit Multiplication; Division
- 5.NBT.5: Fluently multiply multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm up to a 3 digit by 2 digit number.
- 5.NBT.6: Fluently divide up to 4-digit dividends and 2-digit divisors by using at least one of the following methods: strategies based on place value, the properties of operations, and/or the relationship between multiplication and division.
