Science/ SS
This week, we will wrap up our Science unit on Ecosystems (Unit 6) and introduce a new Social Studies Unit (Unit 5- Reconstruction). In the beginning of the week, students will finish up their Ecosystem Food Web group assignment. We will discuss ecosystem changes, scarcity, extinction, and overabundance. On Friday, we will introduce Social Studies Unit 5 - Reconstruction. We will begin by watching a video reviewing American History from the Civil War to Reconstruction.
Reading
This week, we will continue Milestones Review and share test taking strategies. Students will be using iReady Milestone Practice Assessments through both whole group collaboration and independently. On Monday and Tuesday, students will be reviewing main idea, key details, and summaries. Later in the week, we will review using evidence to support inferences. On Friday, we will review language and grammar questions.
Standards focus this week:
ELAGSE4RI2: Determine the main idea of a text and explain how it is supported by key details; summarize the text.
ELAGSE4RI1: Refer to details and examples in a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text.
Writing
This week, we will continue to practice writing Narrative Extended Constructed Responses. Students will practice writing a story off of informational texts. They will practice two separate pieces, one of which will be collected for a practice grade on Friday.

Georgia Milestones
Our 3rd-5th grade students will get to show what they know on the Georgia Milestones beginning next week! Georgia Milestones assessments are designed to provide information about how well students are mastering grade level content standards.
Here are a few reminders about our testing days:
- We will be in “testing mode” throughout our building from 8:00 AM-11:00 AM each morning during the testing window.
- No volunteers or visitors during our testing window.
- We begin testing shortly after the bell rings at 7:40AM.
Students who are prepared, calm, and rested perform better on tests. Here are some of the many ways to help your student approach Georgia Milestones in a relaxed, positive way:
- Be certain your student gets plenty of sleep.
- Eat a healthy breakfast and lunch.
- Be certain your student your student is at school on time. We begin testing shortly after the bell rings and devices take some time to set up properly.
- Be encouraging and positive.
What is Safety Patrol?
We are looking for rising 5th grade students who consistently demonstrate good citizenship and leadership qualities with good decision-making abilities. Students will help keep our students safe in the hallways during arrival and dismissal, and also participate in monthly lunchtime meetings & celebrations. If selected, students can participate in training throughout May and be ready to serve on Patrol starting in August.
Patrol Parent Q & A:
How do students apply? Sponsors visited the classrooms this week and handed out applications. If interested, students can complete the application and have parents sign off, then students can turn it in to teachers by Wednesday May 1st . Students in good academic standing, with excellent citizenship, and sufficient teacher recommendations will get priority for first semester. Students who do not make it for first semester will have a goal setting meeting with Mrs. McLeod and can work towards joining second semester.
What is the time commitment? Students working the AM shift will need to arrive at school by 7:05 to be on post by 7:10 every day starting the third week of school. Afternoon patrols will need to have transportation to leave school between 2:30-2:35. Students can choose to do a semester of patrol, or the whole year!
How will students be assigned posts and how often will they change? We try to match students’ strengths to their post, and we change at least 3 times per year. There are two officers during each quarter (lieutenant and captain) who help with assigning posts, checking attendance, etc.
What if my student is unable to attend? Please let an officer or Mrs. McLeod or Coach Alex know so we can get coverage if needed.
Please contact Christina McLeod with any questions [email protected]
Safety Patrol Agreement This is a very important job, and we need your commitment to work hard and follow our agreements so our school will be safe!
