What are we focusing on this upcoming week?
- Writing: We continued diving into expository essays this week! We analyzed our new writing prompt and started to read sources on how plants, animals, and humans rely on each other. Next week, we will finish analyzing the sources and start to collect text evidence to support our central idea. Students will organize their ideas using a graphic organizer, start writing their introduction, and begin writing their body paragraphs.
- Reading: We continued to work on finding the central idea (main idea) and relevant details (key details) and text features in an expository text and then finished the week reading a folktale. Next week, we will be starting the genre of drama. We will learn the story elements of a drama, discuss theme, and character development.
- Math: Next week we will take the math MAP test at the beginning of the week then focus on MGSE4.NBT.5 Multiply a whole number of up to four digits by a one-digit whole number, and multiply two two-digit numbers, using strategies based on place value and the properties of operations. Illustrate and explain the calculation by using equations, rectangular arrays, and/or area models. MGSE4.OA.3 Solve multistep word problems with whole numbers and having whole-number answers using the four operations. Represent these problems using equations with a symbol or letter standing for the unknown quantity. Assess the reasonableness of answers using mental computation and estimation strategies including rounding. We highly recommend they practice their math and division facts at home during this unit.

- 4.2 (Ms. Smith): We have started Unit 6: Geometry!
This week, students learned the vocabulary that we will be using throughout the unit- different types of lines and angles. Students started identifying these properties within shapes (G.1) and started creating parallel and perpendicular lines (G.1).
Next week, students will be sorting shapes based on their angles (G.1), drawing shapes following certain properties (G.1), and then classifying triangles by their angles and sides (G.1 & G.2).

This year, our 2nd and 4th grade students will be taking the MAP Growth assessment, which is a computer-adaptive test that measures skills in Reading and Math. Students will take this assessment with their homeroom classes over the course of the next three weeks, beginning next Monday, October 3rd. Please see attached flyer with details about the assessment!
There is nothing you need to do to prepare your child before the assessment. We will simply encourage all students to try their best! Teachers will be able to use the results of the test to help inform instruction, personalize learning, and monitor the growth of individual students. MAP Growth will not be used as part of your child's grade.
Please don't hesitate to reach out to me if you have any questions about the MAP Growth assessment!
