What are we focusing on this upcoming week?
Writing: We started a new genre of writing this week- fictional narratives! The kids love it! Next week, we will dive deeper into planning our piece by creating a character, developing the setting, and planning the sequence of events.
Reading: We started our new unit off by reading narrative nonfiction and learning about different sources of energy. Next week, we will read another narrative nonfiction and focus on the skills of finding the central ide and key details, locating and using text features, and understanding author’s craft and purpose. We will also start reading some myths as we jump into a new genre. This will help us practice cause and effect, making inferences, summarizing, and understanding the importance of characters and plot.
Math: This week we reviewed and prepared for our unit 4 test and took our unit 4 test. Next week we will start unit 5! This unit will build on their fraction knowledge as we start to see the connection between fractions and decimals. We will start with this standard: MGSE4.NF.5 Express a fraction with denominator 10 as an equivalent fraction with denominator 100 and use this technique to add two fractions with respective denominators 10 and 100.
4.2 (Ms. Smith): This week we began our first 5th grade unit- order of operations! Next week we will evaluate expressions with or without grouping symbols that contain more than one operation, write simple expressions without evaluating them, interpret numerical expressions with/without evaluating them, and compare digits in whole numbers based on the base ten system.
