What are we learning this week?
Math
Enhanced
This week, we will continue our final math unit of the year, Unit 6: Geometric and Spatial Reasoning. Our main focus is on exploring area and perimeter. Specifically, we will be calculating the area and perimeter of rectangles, squares, and composite rectangles. On Thursday, students will have a practice grade on perimeter and area review.
Our target standard this week is: 4.GSR.8.3 Solve problems involving area and perimeter of composite rectangles involving whole numbers with known side lengths.
Accelerated

Science
This week, we will continue our new Science unit on Ecosystems (Unit 6). Our topics of focus this week will be on food chains & food webs and ecosystems. Students will be assigned a food chain activity for a minor grade. Then, they will start an ecosystem project which will be done in groups. On Friday, students will be introduced to their Spring Showcase Presentation on their Rube Goldberg Machines they started in STEM.
Reading
This week, we will continue Milestones Review and share test taking strategies. Students will be using iReady Milestone Practice Assessments through both whole group collaboration and independently. In the beginning of the week, students will review informational text structures. On Wednesday, students will have a minor grade on the skills we have reviewed. On Thursday, we will begin to review elements of poetry and drama. On Friday, students will answer questions on language usage and grammar, and we will go over as a class.
Standards we will focus on this week:
ELAGSE4RI5: Describe the overall structure (e.g., chronology, comparison, cause/effect, problem/solution) of events, ideas, concepts, or information in a text or part of a text.
ELAGSE4RL5: Explain major differences between poems, drama, and prose, and refer to the structural elements of poems (e.g., verse, rhythm, meter) and drama (e.g., casts of characters, settings, descriptions, dialogue, stage directions) when writing or speaking about a text.
Writing
On Monday, we will begin narrative extended constructed responses. Each day this week students will get a short passage to read followed by a prompt. They will use the skills we have reviewed to write these extended responses.

2024-25 Class Placement Considerations
This May we will begin to hold our placement meetings to create classes for the next school year. We value your input as parents and want to consider the whole child when creating classes. If you want to provide feedback on the type of classroom environment you feel your child would do best in, feel free to fill out this optional survey from Mrs. Zarzour. She will be taking feedback until May 10th that she will consider as a part of our school process. This feedback is private and only necessary information is shared with us as teachers.

iReady Diagnostics
On April 24th & 25th, fourth grade will begin to take our end of the year iReady Diagnostic assessments in Reading and on May 13th & 14th in Math.
These tests are nationally normed and will provide us with a snapshot of all they have learned this school year! Unlike GA Milestones, it is not limited to just the grade level standards and is a K-8 adaptive assessment. This allows us to see the full depth of a student's understanding.
This assessment is one of the things Mrs. Zarzour considers when looking at what advanced courses or supports a student may need next fall. Please encourage your child to do their very best on this assessment as it is an important end of the year assessment to show all of their growth.
