What were our focuses this past week?
- Writing: Students focused on drafting their realistic fiction stories! It is great to see these starting to come to life!
- Reading: While still reading the class read aloud, Tiger Rising, we have focused this week on summarizing texts. Students have been involved in guided practice examples as well as independent practice to work towards mastery of this skill. Another thing we focused on was grounding evidence back in the text. For example, if students claim Rob (main character in Tiger Rising) is brave, the question becomes, "Why do you think that? What is your evidence?"
- Math: **Please refer to the math blog pages for information**
- Social Studies: This week we began our first social studies unit- The American Revolution! To get students excited about this new unit, they participated in an engaging activity on Tuesday that helped them understand one of the causes of the revolution. Students were told that there were going to be new fees collected at school each day- such as $0.50 to sit at their desk and $0.10 for each paper they use. The point of course being to help students understand how unfair this felt when they had no say in these decisions- similar to how the colonists felt after the French and Indian War when they were told they had to pay taxes to help pay for the war.
- Student Success Skills: Resilience. Students thought about what it means to "bounce back" after challenging situations.
