What were our focuses this past week?
- Writing: Students continued generating ideas and drafting opinion essays. Students focused on creating a strong thesis and listing 3 reasons to support their thesis (or opinion). Students worked to support their reasons by listing short stories, examples, facts, and even quotes. For word work, students studied the prefixes "non-", "un-", and "in-" and asked themselves: what does it mean? What are some examples or words I've heard with this prefix? What picture can I draw to help me remember the meaning of this prefix?
- Reading: Our main focus this week was answering "how" and "why" questions in scientific, nonfiction texts. We also focused on synthesizing- putting together information learned from multiple sources to create 1 big, conceptual understanding.
- Math: Topics covered this week in math-
- 4.1: Division strategies- using base-10 blocks and partial quotients; remainders in division word problems **UNIT 2 TEST THURSDAY 10/28**
- 4.2: Organize and solve problems involving money, finding the perimeter of objects with missing sides, and creating/interpreting data from a line plot
- 5.1: Adding and subtracting decimals
- Science: We continued our study of the solar system. Students focused on similarities and differences between planets and stars. Students were also given the opportunity to research a planet of their choice and create a fact card to share the information they found with their classmates.
