What were our focuses this past week?
- Writing: Students continued working on their opinion essays. As we're still in the idea generating stage, students focused on adding stories and examples to support their reasons. We also continued our study of the prefix "re-". Students listed examples, thought of non-examples, and practiced identifying this prefix being used in a short text.
- Reading: Students practiced answering "how" and why" questions in technical texts (typically more difficult to read texts that use unfamiliar vocabulary/terms). Students also continued to think about nonfiction text structures as they read throughout the week.
- Math: Topics covered this week in math-
- 4.1: Continuation of multiplication strategies (area model, rectangular array, and partial products)- focused on 2-digit by 2-digit multiplication.
- 4.2: Converting customary and metric units of capacity, length, and mass; elapsed time (Unit 7 Test next Friday, 10/22)
- 5.1: Adding and subtracting decimals (Unit 2 Test next Friday, 10/22)
- Science: In science, students continued their study of the solar system. This week, we focused on moon phases- what causes this change in shape?
