What were our focuses this past week?
- Writing: Students continued generating ideas and drafting opinion essays. Students focused on creating a strong thesis and listing 3 reasons to support their thesis (or opinion). For word work, students studied the prefix "re-" and asked themselves: what does it mean? What are some examples or words I've heard with this prefix? What picture can I draw to help me remember the meaning of this prefix?
- Reading: Our main focus this week was identifying text structures: cause/effect, compare/contrast, problem/solution, description, and chronological. Students learned that it's important to identify these nonfiction text structures because it will help them better understand what they are reading.
- Math: Topics covered this week in math-
- 4.1: Multiplication strategies (area model, rectangular array, and partial products)
- 4.2: Converting customary units (capacity, length, weight, and mass)
- 5.1: Representing decimals/describing their relationship and representing decimals in a variety of ways.
- Science: We started a new unit in science: The Solar System! This week, students had the opportunity to explore what they already know and what they want to know about the solar system. Students were able to research answers to their "I want to know/I wonder..." questions. Students also learned about space technology and solar system models.
