What are we focusing on this upcoming week?
Writing: This week we worked on writing a strong conclusion, added transitional words and phrases, and edited. Students got a new prompt for an informational essay that they will write more independently next week. Next week, students will gather text evidence to support their topic of how to survive a hurricane. We will work on paraphrasing and quoting text evidence and learn the difference between the two.
Reading: This week we finished historical fiction and started expository texts focusing on summarizing, using text features, and recognizing text structure as well as reading some narrative poems. Next week, we will continue with reading poetry. We will determine a poem's structure to understand narrative poetry, use literary elements to read and understand narrative poetry, and identify the theme.
Math: This week we focused on finding lines of symmetry. Standard 4G3: Recognize a line of symmetry for a two-dimensional figure as a line across the figure such that the figure can be folded along the line into matching parts. Identify line-symmetric figures and draw lines of symmetry. Study guides went home this week for our test on Friday 3/17. Next week, we will review and prepare for the test. There are assigned geometry lessons in iReady for extra practice as well.
This unit is heavy vocabulary, so it is important to practice!

4.2 (Ms. Smith): Next week in advanced math...
We will start our 3rd fifth grade unit, Multiplying and Dividing with Decimals.
This will be a quick unit, with the test in just a few weeks. Luckily, the only new concept students will be learning is how to multiply and divide with decimals.
Next week, we will mainly focus on the NBT.2 standard, which is repeated from an earlier unit this year. Students will practice multiplying and dividing by a power of ten.
