What are we learning this week?
Math
Enhanced -
This week, we will discuss decimal notation, comparing decimals, and adding tenths and hundredths. Students will have a minor grade on Wednesday on matching decimals, fractions and their models. Our test for this unit will be on February 14.

Social Studies
This week, we are continuing our third Social Studies unit on Westward Expansion. Our main focus will be the impact of Westward Expansion on American Indians. Students will have an American Indian Journal Entry Writing Assignment due for a major grade on Wednesday and a map labeling activity due for a practice grade on Thursday. We will wrap up this unit on Thursday. Starting on Friday, we will begin a new science unit, Force and Motion.
Reading
This week, we will begin to read and understand free verse poetry. We will discuss and learn about the characteristics of free verse poetry. The characteristics we will be focusing on are personification, metaphor, theme, making inferences, and summarizing. We will also be comparing texts. Our test for this unit will be on February 8.
Writing
This week, we will start planning for a new essay, which will be a Narrative Historical Fiction. We will be reading sources about the Settling of Jamestown and the Starving Times to help guide our writing. Students will plan their essays using story maps.
