What are we focusing on this week?
- Writing: Students will continue their literary essays. Last week, students worked hard to create a strong thesis to use as the basis of their paper. After this, students focused on 3 reasons + evidence from the story to support their theses. This week, students will continue identifying portions of the story to support their idea and begin adding elaboration to their reasons/evidence.
- Reading: This week, we will be focusing on the following reading standards:
- RL6- Compare and contrast the point of view from which different stories are narrated.
- Identify the point of view in a story
- RL3- Describe in depth a character in a story or drama, drawing on specific details in the text (character's thoughts, words, or actions)
- Describe in depth an event in a story, drawing on specific details in the text.
- RL4- Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including those that allude to significant characters found in mythology.
- RL6- Compare and contrast the point of view from which different stories are narrated.
- Math:
- 4.1: Begin Unit 4- Operations with Fractions
- MGSE4.NF.3 Understand a fraction 𝑎/𝑏 with a numerator >1 as a sum of unit fractions 1𝑏.
- a. Understand addition and subtraction of fractions as joining and separating parts referring to the same whole.
- b. Decompose a fraction into a sum of fractions with the same denominator in more than one way, recording each decomposition by an equation. Justify decompositions, e.g., by using a visual fraction model. Examples: 3/8 = 1/8 + 1/8 + 1/8; 3/8 = 1/8 + 2/8 ; 2 1/8 = 1 + 1 + 1/8 = 8/8 + 8/8 + 1/8.
- c. Add and subtract mixed numbers with like denominators, e.g., by replacing each mixed number with an equivalent fraction, and/or by using properties of operations and the relationship between addition and subtraction.
- d. Solve word problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions referring to the same whole and having like denominators, e.g., by using visual fraction models and equations to represent the problem.
- MGSE4.NF.3 Understand a fraction 𝑎/𝑏 with a numerator >1 as a sum of unit fractions 1𝑏.
- 4.2: Division
- 5.NBT.6- Fluently divide up to 4-digit dividends and 2-digit divisors by using at least one of the following methods: strategies based on place value, the properties of operations, and/or the relationship between multiplication and division. Illustrate and explain the calculation by equations or concrete models (for example- rectangular arrays or area models)

- 4.1: Begin Unit 4- Operations with Fractions
- Science: Students will begin learning about sound! Learning will be focused on how sound is created and how sound is changed. At the end of the week, students will begin a light & sound project to demonstrate their learning.

- Continuous Achievement Information:
- Over the next 3 weeks our Curriculum Support Teacher, Diana Zarzour, will be screening every student in the school to ensure they are in the most appropriate placement. She will be reviewing a variety of data points on every child to determine if any adjusts need to be made to continuous achievement levels for Math and Reading/Writing. As a parent- there is nothing you need to do! She will contact you directly if your child is recommended to move placement levels or needs to have a class change due to a teacher change in levels taught the week of Dec. 13th. If you have any questions about this please contact her directly at [email protected]
- Hour of Code:
- The week of Dec. 6th-10th we will be celebrating the Hour of Code!! Mrs. Davis will be doing coding with all of her classes in STEAM. This website has TONS of games and activities for kids: https://hourofcode.com/us/learn \
- Holiday Shop:
- On Monday, December 6th, students will preview gifts they can purchase at school to give to others during the holiday season. Throughout the rest of the week (December 7-10), students will be able to purchase items at school by bringing in money from home.
