What did we do this past week? Here's a glimpse at some of the things we learned...
- iReady Diagnostic (math & reading): Students did a wonderful job taking their time and putting forth their best effort during these beginning-of-the-year assessments.
- Math: Students focused on reviewing previously learned multiplication and division skills as well as strategies to solve tricky word problems.
- Reading: We started our class read aloud, Tiger Rising. Specific skills students focused on throughout the week: reading intensely (stopping and jotting!), choosing "with-in reach books", and summarizing.
- English Language Arts: Our focus this week was prefixes, suffixes, root words, and base words.
- Writing: Students spent time generating ideas for possible realistic fiction stories. They thought about stories from ordinary moments, imagining stories they wish existed in the world, and developing believable characters.
- Science: The water cycle! Students learned key terms such as condensation, evaporation, and precipitation. Science highlight of the week: students worked together as table teams to create a water cycle model in the classroom.
- Student Success Skills: Emotions! Students watched a short video during morning meeting that talked about different emotions and why we feel them. This led to great classroom discussions surrounding how to calm our bodies when we feel strong emotions starting to take over. Moving forward throughout the year, students will learn about one student success skill per week.
**Wondering about homework? We highly encourage all students to spend at least 20 minutes per night reading a book of their choosing.
