This week, science is all about how we change sound by changing the strength or speed of the vibrations. Students are still exploring with lots of hands-on group activities. When we return from the break, we will launch the choice board for light and sound, so make sure you are still discussing the concepts over the break!
We launched our Light and Sound Unit last week, and this week is all about light. This week, we will talk about how light can be reflected (bounced) and refracted (bent). Students will complete lots of hands-on activities to experiment with light, and how it travels in a straight line until something gets in the way. On Friday, we will begin talking about sound. No choice boards yet, as this week is all about exploring and experimenting.
We decided to give students a little more time to finish their social studies choice boards, so students had today and will have tomorrow to complete their work in class. Whatever they don't complete in class, will need to be completed for homework. Choice boards will be due for grading Wednesday morning.
On Thursday, we will begin our 3rd and 4th science units, Light and Sound. The units are both short, so students will learn the content from both units, and then we will launch a choice board for both units combined. The units will continue into the next semester.
For light, students will learn what makes an object opaque, translucent, or transparent. We will learn how light is reflected by mirrors, and what happens to light when it is refracted.
For sound, we will discuss how sound is produced, how matter affects how sound travels, and what makes sound different.
This unit is so fun and there are lots of opportunities for students to explore with hands-on activities. Make sure to notice light and sound around you at home too!
