This week in reading we are wrapping up our first unit, Interpreting Characters. The students have been working so hard during this first unit of our reader's workshop, and they will show what they know on our unit assessment on Wednesday. On Monday and Tuesday, we will be working hard to go over/review our study guide responses, as well analyze sample student responses from 3rd - 5th grade to see where our responses match up. From there, we are learning what additional information we need to include to hit our target 4th/5th grade responses. The kids are doing awesome with this work! :) When we return from our long weekend, we will be diving into our second unit: Reading the Weather, Reading the World. This is a non-fiction unit focusing on extreme weather. The kids will love it!
This week in writing students are wrapping up their current unit (The Arc of Story) and beginning their new one (Boxes & Bullets: Personal and Persuasive Writing). This week students are taking their 'post on-demand' for their narrative writing unit, The Arc of Story. This is where we give students a prompt (the same prompt from their pre on-demand) to see their growth throughout the unit. We will be counting this as a quiz grade for bend III (the third and final section of the unit), since this is a cumulative check-in on what we taught throughout the unit.
Then later in the week students will take their 'pre on-demand' for unit 2, Boxes and Bullets. This will give us a baseline of how well our students understand opinion/argumentative writing. This is not for a formal grade (it's a pre-test). Students have worked SO hard on this first unit, and they are excited to be diving in to a new genre of writing!! :)
