Reading: This week in reading, we are introducing allusions within Greek Mythology. This includes phrases and sayings such as herculean, which means strong, and an Achilles heel, which means someone's big weakness. This is a fun concept for students to learn as they will have the opportunity to explore many different myths using kid-friendly versions and websites. They will become familiar with many of the stories to further understand the importance of allusions as we discuss them throughout the week.

Writing: This week, we are starting our new unit on Informational Writing focusing on historical events and facts. We will learn how to choose topics, create our headings and subheadings to organize our information, and begin to gather that information through further research. We will continue to focus on the American Revolution in order to link this unit with our social studies concepts. At the end of this week, we will work on our data folders graphing our informational pre-assessments and setting goals for this unit.

Language Arts: This week, we are continuing to work on figurative language by learning about adages and proverbs. An adage is a short saying that discusses a general truth about human nature, such as "better safe than sorry". A proverb is a short saying that gives advice, such as "don't judge a book by it's cover". We are linking this figurative language with our allusions within mythology.

Standards for this Week:
ELACC4RL4: Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including those that allude to significant characters found in mythology (e.g., Herculean).
ELACC4W2: Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas and information clearly.
ELACC4L5b:  Recognize and explain the meaning of common idioms, adages, and proverbs.

Homework for this Week:
  • Reading log and responses
  • Quiz on poetry, drama, and prose on Friday 1/29!

General RELA Reminders:
Have a wonderful week!

-Mrs. Alterman, Ms. Densmore, Ms. Getzfred, Ms. Spaeth
