Grading Policy

40% - Assessments

30% - Quizzes

25% - Classwork

5% - Homework

Recovery Policy

Students who score a 69 or below must retake their assessment (and they will be provided 1-2 study sessions before the retake). Students who score a 70-79 have the option to retake, and must attend study sessions to be given the opportunity to retake the assessment. (We typically do ‘lunch n’ learns’ or morning/homeroom study sessions). For quizzes, we do retakes on a case by case basis.

Homework Policy

Homework will be assigned nightly and we have assigned certain subjects to certain days. Our homework schedule is below. Students should be working for about 45 minutes to an hour on their homework, although it varies depending on what we have coming up in class. Homework makes of 5% of a student’s average. We choose purposeful homework that either reinforces a skill that has been taught, or we are frontloading for the next day. Homework is checked for completion, not accuracy. For math (especially if it’s a worksheet) we provide answer keys in an ‘answer key binder’ that students may check during math stations. Our purpose of homework is for the students to either practice a skill or frontload a skill. We do not expect perfection when it comes to after school practice. We are teaching our students study skills :)

Students are expected to be responsible for their own homework, including writing it down every Monday in their agenda, and they know their expectations. Please encourage your child to email their teacher with questions, or bring in questions to class the next day for us to explain if there is confusion.

Most often, students should expect the following schedule for homework in each subject:

Monday- reading and writing; science/social studies
Tuesday- reading and writing; math
Wednesday- reading and writing; science/social studies
Thursday- reading and writing; math
*Writing homework will be interspersed throughout depending on our writing units

Study Guide Policy

This year, you will notice that study guides will look a little different than they may have been presented in previous years. Rather than expecting students to memorize concepts and then work out problems from each of the units as regurgitated information, we want students to understand what they need to know and apply those concepts in their own terms by referring to exemplar sample questions and using their mathematical language. These study guides and sample questions will serve as models for what a student should expect on an assessment in correlation with our standards. This format will help to guide them in their studying rather than define their studying.

As always, we will certainly be providing individual support to each of our students and preparing them for upcoming assessments like we normally do in each of our classes. Reviewing for our assessments in class will involve a variety of strategies including discussing content within small groups, taking notes in our interactive notebooks, and providing hands on experiences for students to apply each skill. We also have our Fourth Grade Weebly site (fourthgradenpes.weebly.com) with resources for each unit and standard. Based on our knowledge and observations, we realize that this is the most valuable and impacting way for our students to learn and prepare for upcoming assessments.

As a fourth grade team, along with our administration, we believe this new format will enhance student’s learning and understanding of the math standards for the curriculum using best practices. Please let us know if you have any questions or comments and we will be happy to discuss with you.

Thank you for all you do to support our students!

Agendas and Binders Policy

Students will be expected to keep up with their agendas and their personal binders. We will be filling in the agendas with important dates and events including quizzes and assessments every Monday morning.  Students are expected to be responsible for their own homework, including writing it down every Monday in their agenda, and they know their expectations. It is important that they keep up with these dates as well. Please check your child's agenda and initial that you have reviewed the information for that week with your child.

In their personal binders students will also have a yellow folder. This is where any and all important information and flyers will come home, as well as graded pieces. Please check this yellow folder weekly as we have hand outs and papers to return on a regular basis.
