This week, your child will continue to review and be assessed over the standards below. Details about each standard for this unit are listed below. Your child has been taking notes on the standards throughout the week in their Math Journals. Please remember that these are wonderful study tools that we encourage the students take home (as long as they remember to bring them back!) The students have been taking very neat, detailed notes that I know will makes awesome study tools! Study guides were passed out last week! These weekly check-ins let us see how your kiddo is progressing with the standards as we move through the unit :).

**We will have the Unit 5 assessment over these standards on Wednesday,**

__March 9th!__The standards and homework for the week are listed below.

**4.1 Standards for the Week:***4.NF.5 -*Express a fraction with denominator 10 as an equivalent fraction with denominator 100, and use this technique to add two fractions with respective denominators 10 and 100. For example, express 3/10 as 30/100, and add 3/10 + 4/100 = 34/100.

*4.NF.6 -*Use decimal notation for fractions with denominators 10 or 100. For example, rewrite 0.62 as 62/100; describe a length as 0.62 meters; locate 0.62 on a number line diagram.

*4.NF.7*- Compare two decimlas to hundredths by reasoning about their size. Recognize that comparisons are valid only when the two decimals refer to the same whole. Record the results of comparisons with the symbols >, <, or =, and justify the conclusions, e.g. by using a visual model.

__: This week we are continuing with our current unit, Unit 1: Order of Operations!__

**4.2**The kiddos have been so excited to dive into their first 5th grade unit, Order of Operations! Within the unit, we will work on using the order of operations (PEMDAS) when solving equations, writing expressions (numerical to written and vice versa) and evaluating them, understanding the solving equations with the powers of 10, three digit by two digit multiplication, and long division. Our standards this week will be 5NBT5 & 5NBT6, multiplication via the standard algorithm and division.

__4.2 Standards for Unit 1:__*5.OA.1*- Use parentheses, brackets, or braces in numerical expressions, and evaluate expressions with these symbols.

*5.OA.2-*Write simple expressions that record calculations with numbers, and interpret numerical expressions without evaluating them.

*5.NBT.1-*Recognize that in a multi-digit number, a digit in one place represents 10 times as much as it represents in the place to its right and 1/10 of what it represents in the place to its left.

*5.NBT.2-*Explain patterns in the number of zeros of the product when multiplying a number by powers of 10, and explain patterns in the placement of the decimal point when a decimal is multiplied or divided by a power of 10. Use whole-number exponents to denote powers of 10.

*5.NBT.5-*Fluently multiply multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm (or other strategies demonstrating understanding of multiplication) up to a 3 digit by 2 digit factor.

*5.NBT.6-*Fluently divide up to 4-digit dividends and 2-digit divisors by using at least one of the following methods: strategies based on place value, the properties of operations, and/or the relationship between multiplication and division. Illustrate and explain the calculation by using equations or concrete models. (e.g., rectangular arrays, area models)

5.1: This week we are continuing with our current unit, Unit 5: 2D Figures and Unit 6: Volume and Measurement

Units 5 and 6 will be taught in unison since we will already be talking about geometry when calculating their measurements. So much of the content already overlaps, so it simply makes sense :) We will start off the unit by focusing on the measurement standards, and then wrap up the unit with the geometry standards. Our standards this week will be 5MD5 (continuing to calculate volume).

__5.1 Standards for Units 5 & 6:__

Unit 5:Unit 5:

*5.G.3-*Understand that attributes belonging to a category of two-dimensional figures also belong to all subcategories of that category. For example, all rectangles have four right angles and squares are rectangles, so all squares have four right angles.

*5.G.4-*Classify two-dimensional figures in a hierarchy based on properties (polygons, triangles and quadrilaterals).

__Unit 6:__*5.MD.1-*Convert among different-sized standard measurement units (mass, weight, length, time, etc.) within a given measurement system (customary and metric) (e.g., convert 5cm to 0.05m), and use these conversions in solving multi-step, real word problems.

*5.MD.2-*Make a line plot to display a data set of measurements in fractions of a unit (1/2, 1/4, 1/8). Use operations on fractions for this grade to solve problems involving information presented in line plots.

*5.MD.3-*Recognize volume as an attribute of solid figures and understand concepts of volume measurement.

a. A cube with side length 1 unit, called a “unit cube,” is said to have “one cubic unit” of volume, and can be used to measure volume.

b. A solid figure which can be packed without gaps or overlaps using n unit cubes is said to have a volume of n cubic units.

*5.MD.4-*Measure volumes by counting unit cubes, using cubic cm, cubic in, cubic ft, and improvised units.

*5.MD.5-*Relate volume to the operations of multiplication and addition and solve real world and mathematical problems involving volume.

a. Find the volume of a right rectangular prism with whole- number side lengths by packing it with unit cubes, and show that the volume is the same as would be found by multiplying the edge lengths, equivalently by multiplying the height by the area of the base. Represent threefold whole-number products as volumes, e.g., to represent the associative property of multiplication.

b. Apply the formulas V = l × w × h and V = b × h for rectangular prisms to find volumes of right rectangular prisms with whole-number edge lengths in the context of solving real world and mathematical problems.

c. Recognize volume as additive. Find volumes of solid figures composed of two non- overlapping right rectangular prisms by adding the volumes of the non-overlapping parts, applying this technique to solve real world problems.
