**4.2 Math Curriculum**

__: This week we will be continuing__

**4.2****Unit 4: Operations with Fractions...**

Last week, your child was introduced to

**Unit 4: Operations with Fractions.**Our next 3 standards of Unit 4 will be:

**4.NF.3.a, 4.NF.3.c, and 4.NF.3.d.***4.NF.3.a*focuses on adding and subtracting fractions with like denominators.

*4.NF.3.c*focuses on adding and subtracting mixed numbers with like denominators and

*4.NF.3.d*focuses on addition and subtraction fraction word problems with like denominators. Your child will be taking notes on the standards throughout the week in their Math Journals. Please remember that these are wonderful study tools that we encourage the students take home (as long as they remember to bring them back!) The students have been taking very neat, detailed notes that I know will makes awesome study tools! These weekly check-ins let us see how your kiddo is progressing with the standards as we move through the unit :).

**There will be a quiz over these standards this Friday, December 11th!**

The standards and homework for the week are listed below!

__4.2 Standards for the Week:__*4.NF.3.a -*Understand addition and subtraction of fractions as joining and separating parts referring to the same whole.

*4.NF.3.c*- Add and subtract mixed numbers with like denominators, e.g., by replacing each mixed number with an equivalent fraction, and/or by using properties of operations and the relationship between addition and subtraction.

*4.NF.3.d*- Solve word problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions referring to the same whole and having like denominators, e.g., by using visual fraction models and equations to represent the problem.

__4.2 Homework for the Week:__- Tuesday (12/8/15) - IXL R7 & R9 (20-25 minutes of practice)
- Thursday (12/10/15) - Worksheet - Due Friday (12/11/15)

**4.2 Math Curriculum**

__: This week we are continuing with our new unit,__

**4.2****Unit 7: Measurement (Part A)**

This week we are continuing with our Measurement unit! This unit has a LOT of standards, so the unit has been split up into two parts (and will have 2 tests- one prior to Winter Break, and one after). We are currently working on Part A of the unit, which focuses on all of the measurement standards that are geometry related (and a lot of the standards we already practiced within the geometry unit). The standards that we are focusing on this week and next week are listed below.

**There will be a quiz over**

*4.MD.5, 4.MD.6, & 4.MD.7*this Friday, December 11th!

__4.2 Standards for Unit 7- Part A:__*4.MD.3*- Apply the area and perimeter formulas for rectangles in real world and mathematical problems. For example, find the width of a rectangular room given the area of the flooring and the length, by viewing the area formula as a multiplication equation with an unknown factor.

*4.MD.5 -*Recognize angles as geometric shapes that are formed wherever two rays share a common endpoint, and understand concepts of angle measurement:

a. An angle is measured with reference to a circle with its center at the common endpoint of the rays, by considering the fraction of the circular arc between the points where the two rays intersect the circle. An angle that turns through 1/360 of a circle is called a “one-degree angle,” and can be used to measure angles.

b. An angle that turns through n one-degree angles is said to have an angle measure of n degrees.

*4.MD.6 -*Measure angles in whole-number degrees using a protractor. Sketch angles of specified measure.

*4.MD.7 -*Recognize angle measure as additive. When an angle is decomposed into non-overlapping parts, the angle measure of the whole is the sum of the angle measures of the parts. Solve addition and subtraction problems to find unknown angles on a diagram in real world and mathematical problems, e.g., by using an equation with a symbol for the unknown angle measure.

__4.2 Homework for the Week:__- Tuesday (12/8/15) - IXL P15, P16, P17
- Thursday (12/10/15) - Measuring Angles Worksheet
**Quiz on Friday (12/11/15)**

******5.1 Math Curriculum**

5.1: This week we will be continuing

**Unit 4: Adding, Subtracting, Multiplying & Dividing Fractions (Part A)**

This week, your child will be continuing to work on the current unit: Adding, Subtracting, Multiplying & Dividing Fractions! This unit has a LOT of standards, so the unit has been split up into two parts (and will have 2 tests- one prior to Winter Break, and one after). We are currently working on Part A of the unit, which focuses on simply adding and subtracting fractions and mixed numbers with unlike denominators. The standards that we are focusing on this week and next week are listed below.

*There will be a quiz over 5.NF.1, this Friday, December 11th!*

__5.1 Standards for Unit 4 (Part A) :__

*5.NF.1*Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators (including mixed numbers) by replacing given fractions with equivalent fractions in such a way as to produce an equivalent sum or difference of fractions with like denominators. For example, 2/3 + 5/4 = 8/12 + 15/12 = 23/12. (In general, a/b + c/d = (ad + bc)/bd.)

*5.NF.2*Solve word problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions referring to the same whole, including cases of unlike denominators, e.g., by using visual fraction models or equations to represent the problem. Use benchmark fractions and number sense of fractions to estimate mentally and assess the reasonableness of answers. For example, recognize an incorrect result 2/5 + 1/2 = 3/7, by observing that 3/7 < 1/2.

__5.1 Homework for the Week:__- Tuesday (12/8/15) - IXL L6 & L9
- Thursday (11/19/15) -Adding and Subtractions Worksheet. Students will also have to
**create**2 mixed number problems on the back (and solve). **Quiz on Friday (12/11/15)**

Have a great week!
